Manna in the Morning

A daily devotional from Art Peterson, Minister of First Christian Church of Lake Butler, FL

Keep stepping in the light!

Art Peterson - Wednesday, March 30, 2011
It is an interesting observation that the Bible begins with a world of Darkness and the Gospels come to a climax in the ministry of Jesus with a pervading darkness that covers the land at midday. But just as the darkness of the opening verses of Genesis yields to the creation of Light on the first day of creation... so also the Gospels crescendo into the glorious Light of the Resurrection on the First Day of the Week when Jesus rose from the dead. There are days when darkness begins to creep into our lives but we need to remember that God is greater by far than any darkness that may be in our world. The first verses of John’s Gospel remind us that “In Him [Jesus] was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overpower it.” (John 1:4,5) There’s an old hymn entitled “Stepping in the Light.” That’s what we are doing when we are following Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the world. So, you see we don’t need to be afraid of the dark... we just need to keep stepping in the light!

Bloom where you’re planted.

Art Peterson - Tuesday, February 08, 2011
I’m sure that you’ve heard the saying that we are to bloom where we’re planted. As you go to work today maybe your thinking... why does God have me here... in this place. So many work environments are not all that conducive to being a witness for Christ. And yet, we are called upon by our Lord to be light and to be salt. We are to let Christ shine out of our lives wherever we are. We are to be salt permeating the lives of people around us. Salt’s nature is to heal... preserve... enhance... and to bring out the best, when it’s spread around. Has it ever occurred to you that you could be the only Christian somebody in your workplace knows? That being a real possibility are you responsibly letting them see Christ in your life... your attitudes... your work ethic... your words and manners? It’s important that we remember the challenge of I Cor. 10:21, “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God?” So today, rather than going off to work like someone leading you to the saltmines... remember... God has you where you are so that He may be glorified. Bloom where you’re planted. Shine your light. Be salt in a tasteless world. Give God glory with all of your life!
